Onan, Cast Aside Like a Pig’s Liver
For me, becoming a subject in my own right is a moment of movement within stillness (靜中動), when form speaks first; it is also a sculpture that ultimately remains unresolved in its ambiguity.

The Onan series, the central work of this exhibition, takes as its points of departure the sex toy known as an ‘onahole’ and Onan, the biblical figure from Genesis. Cast into a life determined by others, Onan refused the duty imposed upon him. His act appears to me as an expression of solitary subjectivity. The desire to exist on one’s own terms becomes a twisted sculpture that rises upright through space.

‘I touched an organ clotted with blood. It was like a pig’s liver, and, drawn through the orifice of sensation, I became Onan. Like a sheath made only to receive the blade, a being whose assigned role was simply to be penetrated tore open the gap and walked out again.’

The opening in the object is not simply an absence. It is a space of unrealised possibility, what Deleuze calls the virtual, and at the same time a space that touches on Levinas’s il y a, an impersonal state of existence before the self fully emerges. From this fissure in the present, a new subject begins to take shape. Within this darkness, sculpture passes through what Levinas calls hypostasis—the moment in which anonymous existence becomes an individual subject—and emerges as a singular being: at once Onan and myself, and ultimately the Other.

The cry of the body without organs—a body released from fixed functions and organisation—unsettles the boundary between object and subject. The scream of the object becomes entangled with my own scream as I wrench open the door onto the world. The form that emerges at that moment is present here and now, yet it never settles into complete clarity. It remains ambiguous, continually slipping beyond any fixed form.
