Half Sick of Shadows

The work in this exhibition takes inspiration from a poem titled The Lady of Shalott by Alfred Tennyson. In the text, a woman is confined in a tower and cursed to only view the world through a mirror. Great misfortune will come upon her if she looks at Camelot directly.

Since 2016, my work has explored the stories we weave to make sense of the world. This show looks at themes of isolation. On the one hand, it looks at the fictions we construct when we are isolated and only able to view the world through a filtered lens. Much of the world has found itself in some sort of quarantine this past year and we have only been able to view what is happening through the screen of our phones or televisions. These images, like the reflections in a mirror, are not free of distortion. We are all left to weave our own versions of reality that leave us feeling safe and comfortable.

Four gray walls, and four gray towers,

Overlook a space of flowers,

And the silent isle embowers

이번 전시는 알프레드 테니슨(Alfred Tennyson,1809-1892. 영국)의 ‘살롯의 여인The Lady of Shalott’ 라는 시에서 영감을 얻었습니다. 주인공 일레인은 탑에 갇혀 거울을 통해서만 세상을 보도록 저주를 받습니다. 만약 ‘카멜롯’을 직접 바라 본다면큰 불행이 닥칠 것이라는 이야기입니다.

 2016년 이후로 인간이  세상을 이해하기 위해 스스로의 경험을 조합시켜 만들어 내는 이야기에 대해 고민해 왔고 이번 전시는 고립을 주제로 다뤄보았습니다. 고립되어지고 필터링 된 렌즈를 통해서만 세상을 볼 수 밖에 없다면, 이것은 인간이 짜낸 허구를 보는 것이 될 것입니다. 지난 한 해 동안 세계의 많은 사람들이 자가격리에 들어갔고  전화나 메스컴 화면을 통해서만 바깥세상에 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지 볼 수 있었습니다. 거울 속 반사와 같은 이러한 이미지는 왜곡되지 않습니다. 우리를 안전하고 편안하게 느끼게 해 줄 현실적 비전을 짜두어야 합니다.

꽃의 공간을 바라보고

그리고 고요한 섬을 품은 사람들

The Artist’s Curse

On a more personal note, the work also looks at the role of the artist in society. There is a constant fight between wanting to be part of the everyday but also to be impartial and able to look at the world and give commentary from a distance.

In the poem, the lady notices Sir Lancelot and she runs to the window to have a closer look. The curse then causes the lady to die on her way to Lancelot. The lady, an artist who weaves colourful tapestries based on what she observes in the mirror, leaves her work to experience the real world. Some excursions into the real world are more detrimental to an artist’s career than others.

She left the web, she left the loom,

She made three paces thro’ the room,

She saw the water-lily bloom,

She saw the helmet and the plume,

She look’d down to Camelot.

예술가의 저주

좀더 주관적 견해로, 사회안에서 예술가의 역할도 살펴 봅니다. 일상의 일부이고자 하는 욕망과 세상에 한발 떨어져 멀리서도 공정하게 비평하고자 하는 것 사이에는 끊임없는 갈등이 있습니다.

시에서 여인은 랜슬롯 경을 알아 차리고 창으로 달려가 자세히 살펴 봅니다. 저주로 인해 그녀는 랜슬롯에게 가는 도중에 죽게 됩니다. 거울에 비친 화려한 테피스트리를 짜는 예술가로서의 여인은 작품을 떠나 현실 세계를 경험하게 됩니다. 현실은 그녀에게 죽음을 선사 합니다. 잠시의 현실 여행은 다른 여행보다 아티스트의 경력에 더 해가 됩니다.

그녀는 거미줄과 베틀을 떠났고

그녀는 방을 세 걸음 걸었다.

그녀는 수련 꽃을 보았고

그녀는 헬멧과 깃털을 보았고

그녀는 카멜롯을 내려다 보았다.
