예술가란 무엇인가라는 질문에는 세상의 직업군에 속한 작가의 사회적 의무도 포함되어 있다. 작가의 사회적 의무라 함은 세상을 바라보는 다양한 방법을 제공해 주는 것이다. ‘똑같은 세상인데 그리고 얼핏 보면 별거 아닌데 이를 다시보고 새롭게 보고, 그 속에서 놀라운 의미를 찾을 수 있다면 그게 곧 ‘예술’이다.(예술가의 눈으로 세상을 바라보기, 임상빈)’ 그들이 곧 예술가인 것이다.
학창시절 어느 선생님께서 하신 말씀이 잊혀지지 않는다. 수업중에 우연히 ‘미술가의 특별한 눈’ 에 대해 이야기 하셨다. 미술가의 눈썰미는 아주 특별해서 어느 누구라도 볼 수 있으나 아무나 볼 수 없는 것들을 찾아낸다는 것이다. 특별히 날 지칭한 것은 아니었지만 눈에 띄지 않는, 미술을 공부하고 싶었던 그저 평범한 소녀에게는 대단한 존재감을 갖게 하는 이야기였다.
2014년 이후 유리에 비춰진 도시의 이미지들은 ‘미술가의 특별한 눈’에 충분히 합당했다. 어디에나 존재하는 그 이미지들은 ‘특별한 눈’으로 보아야 그 아름다움이 드러난다. 건물을 감싸고 있는 유리의 화려함 위에 굽어지고 휘어지고, 다시 비춰지고 거기에 반짝임까지 더해져 비현실적인 모습이 된다. 풍경을 담고 있는 건물을 보는 건지 비춰지고 있는 도시풍경을 보는 건지 알 수가 없다. 정작 본인의 모습은 보이지 않고 주변풍경만 보일 뿐이다. 비춰진 이미지들은 누구라도 마주칠 수 있으나 쉽게 시선을 끌지 못하기도 한다. ‘특별한 눈’ 만이 너무나도 흔한 이 풍광들을 이끌어 내고 새롭게 보고, 새로운 의미를 찾을 수 있는 것이다.
미술작품을 본다는 것은 유별난 사람들의 유별난 부유물을 보는 것이 아니라 ‘특별한 눈’으로 세상을 보는 사람들에게 삶에 대한 다양한 아이디어를 제공받는 것이다. ‘도시거울’을 보는 이들이 ‘세상이 바뀌는게 아니라 보는 눈이 바뀌는 진귀한 경험 (예술가의 눈으로 세상을 바라보기, 임상빈)’을 했다면 작가로서의 의무와 책임을 다했다 할 수 있을 것 같다.
스스로에게 묻는다.
‘당신은 예술가 입니까’
‘그렇습니다. 난 예술가입니다.’

CITY MIRROR ; ABOUT LOOKING
The question of what it means to be an artist also includes the social obligations of the artist and their place in the world. The artist’s social duty is to provide alternative ways of seeing the world. ‘It’s the same world, and it’s not a big deal at first glance, but if you can see it again, see it anew, and find a surprising meaning in it, that is art.(The Artist’s View of the World, Im Sang Bin)’ The people who can see the world this way are artists.
When I was in school, a teacher said something that I’ll never forget. During class, he mentioned ‘the artist’s special eyes’. The artist’s glance is so special that they find things that anyone can see but that few usually notice. He wasn’t specifically referring to me, but it was a story that made a subtle but lasting impression on an ordinary girl who wanted to study art.
Since 2014, images of the city reflected in glass have been well-suited to the ‘special eye of the artist’. Those images are present all around us but only reveal their beauty when viewed with ‘special eyes’. The images fold and bend over the splendor of the glass that surrounds buildings, shine again, adding sparkle to them, making them surreal. It is unclear whether you are seeing a building containing a landscape or a reflected city view. The building cannot show itself ; it can only show the surrounding landscape. Everyone encounters projected images, but not everyone pays attention. Only ‘special eyes’ can bring out these common scenes, see them anew, and find new meanings.
To see artwork is not to see the unusual quirks of unusual people but to receive various ideas about life from those who see the world with their ‘special eyes’. If the viewers of the ‘City Mirror’ have ‘a rare experience in which the world is not changing, but their eyes are changed,(The Artist’s View of the World, Im Sang Bin)’ then I think I have fulfilled my duties and responsibilities as an artist.
I ask myself,
‘Are you an artist?’
‘Yes. I am an artist.’
